The final SE Lancs. fixture of the season turned out to be controversial and somewhat bizarre affair! Luke Betts in the U17s won his race by 5 mins or so, but missed a small element of the course due to a marshalling error and was surprisingly disqualified. An appeal was made, which the League Committee upheld and Luke who had already won the two previous races by considerable margins is now rightly the overall Under 17's champion. Clubmate Fergus Tallon fared equally well in the U13s, without the drama, with a 2nd place finish (even with a bad chest) and as he has also won the previous 2 races outright, is the overall U13's champion. Well done to both athletes! In the U15s Ben Ramsay had a particularly good run in 8th place which positioned him 5th overall. Adam Sciacca who was away on a school trip has lost his 1st place but should secure 2nd overall. The senior race only had one CAC athlete in Ian Walker who finished in 60th place.

In the SE Lancs Cross-Country league race at Clayton Vale, Manchester, Chorley Ac's juniors took their opportunity despite being very short on numbers to grab star billing with the seniors being away at the national Reebok race in Liverpool. In the U13s Fergus Tallon is now making it a winning habit with a good margin over second place. In the U15s Adam Sciacca took maximum advantage of his brother Ryan's injury absence and won his race in magnificent style very well backed up by Ben Ramsay in 6th place. Not only did Adam conjure this win but he now leads the whole 2009 series. Luke Betts was again masterful in the U17s running within himself and comfortably away from the whole field to win by over half a minute.

Chorley AC's juniors consolidated their hold on the U15's SE League title with another win at the Boggart Hole Clough Cross-Country race. Ryan Sciacca ran a comfortable race in 2nd, backed by brother Adam in 5th and Ben Ramsay and Joe Ellison having a fierce battle in 7th & 8th respectively to win first team place easily. However even these efforts were eclipsed by young Fergus Tallon in the U13s who cunningly ran second throughout his race only to produce a big sprint over the last 100yds to take 1st place by 1 second although he was nearly closed out again by the leader's responding kick.

Despite being a glorious day with less than the usual mud Chorley could only muster 4 senior athletes with Paul Wareing 69th, Henry Minorczyk 79th, Phil McCullagh 131st and Mike Coppin eventually finishing in 135th. The valiant 4 were the 14th vet40 team and 8th vet50 team with Henry having the best individual position as 5th vet60.

26th September 2009 Heaton Park, Manchester

Results

Chorley AC junior runners gave the Club a brilliant start to the new cross country season which opened at Heaton Park where the U15 boys put in a magnificent gold winning team performance with Ryan Sciacca 2nd(15:36), Joe Ellison 4th(15:59) and Adam Sciacca 5th(16:16). This was enhanced with a dominant run by Luke Betts in the U17s 1st(25:00) who got out in front of all the ladies and other juniors and then just controlled the race. The men had a hard act to follow and in the absence of several athletes did very well with Simon Townsend 35th(42:10), David Taylor 47th(43:31), Ian Walker 76th(46:41) in his very first race, Henry Minorczyk 85th(47:37), Jonathan Betts 105th(51:33) coming back after injury, Barry Chester 108th(52:43) returning after a long rest, John Minton 116th(60:19) returning after a heart operation and Mike Coppin 118th(69:33) just unfit. The club finished 8th team overall, 6th vet 40 team, 5th vet 50 team but 1st vet 60 team where Henry was 3rd vet 60 overall backed up by Barry, John & Mike. Overall a very good start for 2009/10 with two first team places and Luke's Betts individual first.
