In the Macclesfield Shield 20K Race Walking event, part of the Lancashire Walking clubs series, held at Sutton in Macclesfield on 6 May, Chorley AC club Chairman, John Payn produced an excellent performance to be placed 4th overall, and third in the handicap event, in a time of 2 hrs 16 mins. This was an excellent achievement given the very hilly nature of this six lap course.

John used this event as preparation for his next International soiree, the European Masters Athletics Championships to be held at Poznan, Poland.
