2012-01-16TerryIn the Auld Lang Syne race on New Years eve from Haworth Dominic Raby had a fantastic race to finish 20th(47:15) and only had internationally named runners in front of him ; this was a dramatic 10 place improvement for him from last year.
2012-01-16TerrySurprisingly another non-celebrator at New Year was Andrew Clough who completed the Nine Standards Yomp(9) at Kirkby Stephens in 57th(72:40).

2011-12-21Mike CoppinChorley XC - Sat 10/12/11. I have to thank all those in CAC whom enabled the XC in Astley Park to succeed and seemingly get many favourable comments. Particularly to John Payn & Barry Chester for helping me set up the courses, Simon Townsend for his organisation of the woodlands and marshalls, and for all those who kindly gave up their time( and their race) to marshall.
2011-12-21Mike CoppinZoe - I have vests and 'T' shirts and I will be there on 7th Jan. Best to remind me just before though! 01257.241451.
2011-12-21SimonLancs XC can be entered on the day...so no problem. Mike C - have you any vests for Ethan?
2011-12-19Zoe JoyceHI Ethan would like to enter the under11 boys Lanc XC championships, he has spikes but no vest, just wandered how we enter and whether you had any vests? Thanks.

2011-12-16Mike CoppinNational XC Championships on 25/2/12 at Parliament Hill, London. Entries by 8th Jan(£6) thro' Club only. No U11s. No late entries. I have the entry listing so anybody who wishes to compete please tell Barry Chester or myself asap.
2011-12-16Mike CoppinNorthern XC Championships 28/1/12 at Pontefract Park, Wakefield. Entries by 8th Jan(£6) but thro' the Club only. No U11s. No late entries. I have the entry sheets so anybody wishing to be entered please contact Barry Chester or myself.
2011-12-16Mike CoppinLancashire XC Championships 7/1/12 at Witton Park, Blackburn. Entries(£3/£4) by 17/12/11...I have forms, but can enter on the day(£4/£6). Full field. This race is often less severe than an ordinary Mid-Lancs race and Lancs AA are urging as many as possible to enter to give a good atmosphere as they fear that many will not compete because they think they will be competing against much better athletes so have no chance.

2011-12-07Mike CoppinChorley XC Sat. 10/12/11 Astley Park. Still looking for an early car park marshall 11:00 to 14:00 at St Lawrences school(Highfield Rd South) to accompany Nick Hughes. Also anybody else wishing early duties 11:30 to 14:00 at Astley Village car park. All race and field marshall volunteers please find me at the pavilion in Astley Park between 11:30 & 12:15(first race 12:30). A tail runner for the senior race also required will suit anybody who wants a little amble to stretch their limbs at the end of the day(really only last lap of the senior race). It looks as if its going to be cold so dress up warm. 01257.241451.
2011-12-06Mike CoppinRossendale XC - yes Scott was 22nd in the U11s but they misquoted his no as 1216(Luke Betts) instead of 1206 - perhaps Scott had some mud on it ! I have asked for them to correct. Also Dave Kershaw a vet55 ; change requested although does not affect anything.
2011-12-06SimonMonday Night Primary Training - the last session will be on 12/12/2011. Start back again on 9/1/2012. No sessions on 19/12, 26/12 and 2/1.
2011-12-05stuarti agree ian well done to all you u11s and the first year u13s it was a tough course in cold and muddy conditions as lewis will tell you after running half the race in only one shoe also well done to fergus took a few falls and showed me that the best way up the steep hill was on the right i was able to pass this on to the undr 17s who packed well to end up 1st team on the day but had to take second overall to a good bolton team
2011-12-04Mike and SimonThanks to all who have volunteered for marshall duties next Saturday's XC in Astley Park. Instructions about the day will be posted on this web site very soon. If you are able to marshall and have not told us, please see Mike or Simon, or leave a message on this board.
2011-12-04Ian GRe : 'mud bath' xc results - Scott isn't listed in the U11s results. He said that when he went through the finish the recorders read out a different number to his so I presume he is the 'Unattached' in 22nd place.

2011-11-08JanThankyou for your thoughtful and very meaningful messages; i appreciate them so much. I feel sad and upset to have to leave something that has given me so much pleasure over the past year. I have loved seeing young athletes develop ; the determination shown by all the youngsters i have been coaching has been in the spirit of the sport ; this is inspiring for adults to watch . I believe whole heartedly in listening to children and young people as being the best way to help them, no matter what their interests in life maybe. Adults can learn from children as well as them from us. I will definitely come and see you all at some of the future races. Take care ; and thankyou for giving me the opportunity to be involved in something i love. Jan
2011-11-07SimonI would at least an hour before start of race to check the course. From memory it is usually pretty muddy, so wellies may be needed.

This has been a hard decision for me to make; i will miss you all and have thoroughly enjoyed being part of the club. I send a big thankyou to all the athletes i have had the privelage to work with; hopefully you will continue working hard and achieve to your individual potential. 2011-10-25Mike CoppinCAC argued that 'athletic' covered all the running disciplines thus making the addition of 'Tri' unnecessary, but Harriers countered that Tri was not seen to be covered by the UKA(ie athletics as we know it) and that mostly Tri Clubs were separate entities eg Preston Harriers/Preston Tri & Bolton Harriers/Bolton Tri, but Harriers wished to emphasie that 'Chorley AC & Tri' were one Club. I find their points reasonable enough not to contest it, and, I do not believe the name too worriesome to run under.

2011-10-15TomAlthough, in the first senior male XC @ Leigh, our 11th place beat the Harriers' 13th place, a combined effort would have seen us take 6th place. In the male vets, where our 8th place beat their 11th, a joint effort would have returned 5th. As for the women's races - a duel effort would have produced results! Benefits are obvious in all categories - There's strength in numbers.

2011-10-10JanMessage for all primary and junior members. As from this Thursday 13th Oct track training will only take place on the weeks when there is no cross country race at the weekend. There will be no Tuesday night training for juniors Tuesday 1st Nov or Thursday 3rd Nov as i am away for a few days. Thankyou Jan
2011-10-10Stephe FletcherI think the word Tri is needed as cycling and swimming are different to all forms of running. Furthemore it alerts any current or budding triathlete that the club will cater for them.
2011-10-09dave kershfirst off being both a.c.member84-87 and07-present anda harrier87-94 i am one hundred per cent behind the merger whatever we call ourselves.one of the many reasons being instead of the polite handclap for'and in6th place chorley at the interclubs.get into em

2011-10-08adiI dont think the word tri matters at all, it is a unique event which demands a lot of time and dedication ! l personally would welcome them back with open arms, if it does bother you just think how many times have you seen Chorley Harriers listed on results sheets or spoken of as Chorley Harriers and Tri Club ?
2011-10-08RickI guess the 'tri' shows the club to be friendly to cycling/ swimming, whereas some athletic clubs may not be... Just a thought anyway..

2011-10-07TomSurely 'Athletic' covers everything. Triathlon adds nothing. If it is to be added to the club name, why not then call it Chorley Road Runners, Hill, Fell, Trail and Cross Country, Triathlon, Walking and Track and Field Athletics Club, as all have an equal place in the ideals of the club?!

2011-08-04IanTwo Chorley AC competitors at the Northern Vets T&F meeting held at a warm Leigh on Wednesday night. John Wright easily won both the 100 and 200 in times of 11.9 and 25.5. I ran 12.6 for 2nd in the 100, threw 21.53 for a PB in the discus, cleared 1.45 and narrowly failed 1.50 when trying the HJ for the 1st time in 20+ years (and somehow managing to get cramp in both calves), then had a strong finish in the 400 to win in 61.2. Anyone over 35 who wants to try a bit more track and field should try one of these meetings - plenty of opportunity to try new events and a wide range of abilities on show !!
2011-08-03SimonThanks. We have received lots of valuable feedback about the proposed club 'merger', and this is being actively discussed. The deadline for remaining comments is 31/08/2011.
2011-08-02Mike CoppinThe Mid-Lancs XC Presentations at Bamber Bridge. Current practice is to book known bands for entertainment post prize giving, however in the last two years all have cleared off leaving litterally an audience of only two. Clearly this is not working and is embarassing, so each Club has been asked what they would prefer :- No entertainment, Entertainment prior to the awards, Entertainment in breaks between junior/senior/team awards, disco instead, other form eg magician etc, just background music, start presentation much ealier than 20:00. The organisers believe that the awards ceremony should be a bit more than just turn up, collect prize, and away again so they are asking for advice. All suggestions to me and I will pass them on.
2011-08-02SimonNo Primary training on Monday night until September 2011 (new school year). But training sessions are held on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Please contact Jan or any of the other coaches for more information.

2011-07-05JanMessage to remind all athletes attending the Primary League final meeting (medal), on Friday 8th July that the competition starts at 6pm, so it will be great if you can get to Robin Park for 5.30pm. Also next Monday 11th July is the final week for the Mini Olympics; there will be a presentation for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each school year for all the events covered; so keep up the great work you are all doing and be proud of yourselves for working so hard. The presentation will take place at Holy Cross after training on the 18th July. The 18th July will be the last Monday training until after the school summer holidays. Anyone who does not already attend Tuesday and Thursday training with me and would like to come along, please give me a ring; everyone is welcome. Thankyou Jan

2011-07-01SimonChorley AC and Chorley Harriers + Tri merger news http://www.youspoon.com/cac/cacmerger.php
2011-07-01Mike Coppin Just a reminder to all that Chorley Harriers have invited all CAC members and their families to their barbacue & disco on Sat. night 2nd July at Chorley Cricket Club at 19:00. Cost is £10 with all food provided. Phone Nicki Rushton on 07540.890107 to register going. In view of the current merger talks between the Clubs it would be diplomatic for as many of us as possible to attend.
2011-07-01SimonThe weather should be good for the last Park Series races tonight. Hopefully my forecast is better than last week's damp squid ;-)
2011-06-30Terry DickensonJust a reminder the oldest Multi terrain race in NW takes place on Sunday 3 July at Wheelton. Now in its 28th year the course is run over canal bank, field and road.
2011-06-27SimonMidlancs T and F Hyndburn results http://www.youspoon.com/cac/midlancstrack2011.php
2011-06-26Mike CoppinIt would appear that those saying that the Harriers members had 'insider' knowledge of the proposals were correct, for the merger team referred their paper back to each Club's Committee as agreed, but the Harriers Committee meeting being held at the Cricket Club had Harrier members turn up, listen to the Committee discussion and read the the papers. I suppose any Club athlete may attend a Committee meeting(there is nothing in the Constitution to say otherwise) although there would be a bit of a crush in my house if everybody came(but you would be welcome!). However to equalise the situation I am going to copy the merger teams proposals todate and they will be available for members to read prior to the final proposals being released onto each web site.
2011-06-26Ian GSunny and warm in Birmingham for day 2 of the Masters T&F. Lots of strapping on a dodgy ankle and lots of plasticine on my spikes due to 4 fouls out of 6 jumps. Ended with 11.23m into a 1.1 headwind for another bronze medal.

2011-06-21SimonWith regard to a possible ‘merger’ between our club and Chorley Harriers, discussions have started and are making positive progress. In the near future, it is proposed to communicate a draft merger proposal and constitution for discussion, via publishing on both web sites (printed copies will also be circulated) at the same time. It is important to note that no decisions have or will be made, without the agreement of the majority of senior club members.
Anyone who has any queries or concerns about the process is encouraged to contact one of the committee members at any time.

John Wright was in complete control of both the V50 100 and 200m to win both comfortably in 12.3 and 26.3 secs. I started with 2nd place in the V40 100m in 12.5 sec - a PB by 0.7 seconds :) and not great conditions, then 1st place in Long Jump (5.26m from 1 jump then injured) and finally 1st place in Triple with a single jump of 9.51m from a (slow) 5 stride approach as I couldn't run!
2011-05-15TerryThe Blacksticks Blue(10K) race near Preston was the battle ground for two Chorley AC athletes with Phil McCullagh coming 107th(54:05) and Tom Hilton 182nd(68:04).

2011-05-08Ian GMeghan, Dominic and Scott made the trip over to Leeds to run in the Jane Tomlinson 'Run for All' fun runs. Meghan and Dominic did the 1.5 mile race for 9-16 year olds and did well to finish in the top 200 from about 1000 runners, even with Meghans sore ankle. Scott ran in the 1 mile race for under 9s, and had to have a parent run with him (or rather desperately try and keep up!). He ran a great race to overtake those who had started too fast as usual, overtook them by half way and went on to win the race by 30-40 metres, with about 500 children running it!! Unfortunately I didn't clock the time as I was too busy trying too keep up!

2011-04-21stuartwe asked a few years ago when jan mayor was running well if she could run in the vets team they said no the team still won a medal but would have been better with jan in that team i think that if you were born in the old lancashire and ran first claim for a club in the new boundry then why not after all you can run from the I O MAN
2011-04-21Mike CoppinDave T you can still run in the Lancs Champs as a guest(which would be good for me as I wouldn't have to award you assessed points for being excluded)but you could not win a county place or medal. However I will put forward a guest medal suggestion.
2011-04-21Dave Tjust a suggestion for the lancs champs, couldnt they embed the mid lancs fixture into the lancs champs, or better still let us born and bred Warringtonian Lancastrians take our rightful place in the starting line up.

2011-03-23TerryTwo Chorley AC athletes were selected to compete for Lancashire at the English schools national cross country held in Wollaton park, Nottingham on Saturday on what was a beautiful day for all runners representing their counties around England. Joe Ellison running in the intermediate boys race did his club and county proud finishing 194th and 3rd for Lancashire, a terrific race for his first county run! Luke Betts ran in the senior boys (being at the younger end of the age group) and he arguably ran one of his best races of the season finishing 63rd out of a field of over 300 and 2nd for Lancashire on a flat course which played to his strengths
2011-03-22Nick HughesJust to let you know that Ben Hughes also ran in the Chorley Primary Schools cross country on March 1st. He finished in a very good 22nd position - not bad for a Year 4 boy!

2011-03-13MikeRick Cordwell has already started on his Track & Field going to Sportscity and doing the 60m heats in 7.90 & 7.86, disappointing times for him.

2011-03-02SimonI can pick them up with Anya and Heather. Say about 18:35, but where from (email me)?
2011-03-02Ian GWould anyone be able to pick up Scott and Dominic from Chorley (just off the A6) on the way to track tomorrow? I will be going straight from work and we're struggling with transport to get them there. Ta.
2011-03-02Ian GSeveral members of Chorley AC represented their schools in the Primary Schools Cross Country held at a soggy Bishops Rawsthorne school on Monday 1st. Girls went off first and their were excellent runs from Mara (?) in 12th closely followed by Emily Hunter in 13th. Others to run included Chloe (?) plus at least one more whose name I don't know. The boys race was a mad stampede at the start but Scott and Dominic Gouldthorpe and Luke Hunter showed their cross country experience by running sensible races with Scott producing his trademark fast finish to get 16th, Luke not far behind in 19th and Dominic in 28th. Both races had 80+ runners and I apologise if I missed anyone!!
2011-03-02Steven WGreat North West Half Maraton Race Report 27/2/2011. Bright and breezy(bracing) conditions at Blackpool, which is noted for fresh air and fun. Fresh air in plentiful supply swept in by a great North Westerly wind, restricted fun to kite flying. Ran quite well, by my modest standards, for approx. 9.5 miles, then experienced discomfort to middle-aged right leg. So with stiff joints and facing stiff breeze, could only shuffle along in closing stages to finish in 1.54.29.

2011-02-27Ian GAfter a very early 6am departure and a 3.5 hour journey the legs were a bit sore for Saturdays long jump competition in the British Masters Indoor Championships. 2011-02-07Tom HiltonI was the only member to run Radcliffe Multi Terrain 10 mile race. - 221/230 in 1:49:44 Start about a mile from the race HQ. Finish about .5m away. Some road then along old railway, which has muddy sections and on undulating paths over exposed, rolling hills. Trail, or even road shoes OK. Enjoyed the course - will be back next year and, if it doesn't class with other local races will be running the 10k version later this year.
2011-02-06SimonWell done Ian :-)
2011-02-05IanFantastic facilities at Sheffield for the Masters Open - no rain or mud in sight! Managed to dip under 8 seconds for the 60m with 7.96 and 4th, in spite of a poor start. Never got the run-up right in the Long Jump (which was conveniently scheduled at the same time as the 60m) and opened with 4.84 - rubbish on paper but I did take off over a metre behind the board. Finally ended up with 5.33 to take 1st place (and didn't hit the board in any of the 6 jumps), beating former GB international decathlete Alex Kruger.
2011-02-05Terry DickensonIf anyone is going to The Parbold Hill Race on 12 Feb. could they take some forms for our Great Hill Race,Park Series and AV's Roddlesworth Roller? Similarly to Norman Matthews Flee Race at Rvington! I will deliver the forms to you if you email me. Many thanks Terry
2011-02-04SimonGood luck to Ian G (60m, long jump) at the indoor track meet in Shefield this weekend.

2011-02-02SimonGood luck to Luke, Joe, Adam, Ryan, Fergus, Ben, Danny, Anya and anyone else who is running the Lancs Schools XC this Saturday. For those of us that are little too old for this race, I am proposing a 'stroll' on the fells on Sunday. Meet at Briscall Baths at 11:00, and we'll take it from there.
2011-01-29SimonI have added a new My Runs( www.youspoon.com/cac/maps.php ) web page which has replaced the old Maps page. It is intended that this page will grow over time to include a broad library of official and user submitted maps of runs (and directions to events) undertaken by Chorley AC members.
2011-01-29SimonSocial run is planned for Sunday 30th January 2011. Meet at Hare and Hounds, Abbey Village for 11:00am. Run around Roddlesworth Roller course(ish), so trail shoes may be a good idea.

2011-01-27NIck HughesThere seems to be some training nights at Bolton Areana for Primary Junior age children. Does anyone know what happens and who can go to it? Hope someone can help!
2011-01-26SimonAnyone interested in an easy, run ("Roddlesworth Stroller")? ... please meet at Hare and Hounds on Sunday at 11:00am. Road or trail shoes should be good enough.
2011-01-23Tom There were 422 finishers at the Chernobyl Challenge 10k on a new course. Among them were two Chorley AC athletes: Paul Clyne 56th - 40 mins 53 secs and Tom Hilton 375th - 61 mins 44 secs. The new course is noticably tougher than the old with two ADDITIONAL testing hills. However, I'm pleased to have run 2 mins 13 secs faster than last summer over the easier course. It was also nice to have one or two people behind me at the finish for a change - 47 in fact!
2011-01-21stuartif you are going to xcountry on sat do not go in the first gate at the top of the hill the entrance is down at the bottom. post code bb11 3ep should take you inside this gate once in follow the road then keep left until you reach the car park

2011-01-10TerryThoughts of other athletes have turned to Track & Field and have been partaking in the Sale Indoor series at Sports City, Manchester where Graeme Ballard has been honing himself for his World Championship race in New Zealand running consistently through December and doing 8:03 for his final 60m sprint. Rick Cordwell also ran for the first time indoors finding it very different from outdoors but was pleased with his benchmarks of 60m(7.85) and 200m(25.42).
2011-01-10MikeMichael Chalfont took himself out for the Joe Salt Fell race coming 15th(27:10) and 4th Vet40.
2011-01-09TomFurther to IOM discussion - Bolton Harriers athlete trying to register in front of me: "I live less than a mile from the venue!" - "Yes, but where were you born?" - "Horwich." - "Horwich isn't in Lancashire." - "It was in 1962 when I was born!!" - "Sorry, but you're not eligible." . . . . . How mad is that?
2011-01-09stuarti o m are classed as lancashire it is the same for the track and field champs
2011-01-09dave kershawsimon dont no wot the discussion was about but if i'as a lancastrian was run outa the medals by a i.o.m.runner id b pretty much peed off.are they classed as guests/non scorers?veiws plz
2011-01-08SimonRandom fact as discussed in car on way home from Lancs XC : Isle of Man population is about 76,512 (July 2009 est.)
2011-01-05SimonLancs XC start times are shown on the event page of the fixtures list. Late entries need to enter at least 30 mins before the start of the race. Have a good race :-)
2011-01-05Mike CoppinDaniel Betts now also partaking in the Northern & National XC Champs at Sunderland & Alton Towers respectively.
2011-01-02Mike CoppinLancashire AA have wished all Chorley AC athletes a happy New Year and have asked that as many of us as possible contest the Lancs XC Champs this weekend(8th Jan) at Witton Park, Blackburn. They wish the fixture to have the same buzz and atmosphere as any Mls or RR event and not be regarded as an elitist event...I am going to compete so thats the elitist bit gone straightaway !! Incidentally Henry Minorczyk and Barry Chester are the reigning 1st & 2nd V60 champs with Eddie Murray having won the Vet65s so it would be nice to support these old codgers in their defences.
2011-01-01Mike CoppinThe National XC Champs at Alton Towers on 19th Feb '11 had to have Club entries in again by this week which made contacting people very difficult. As Alton Towers is more or less on home territory and the course is supposed to be very good(probably means very testing !) Barry and I assessed the likely entrants to be :-Fergus Tallon, Luke Betts, Mike Coppin, Barry Chester, Paul Wareing, Phil McCullagh, Henry Minorczyk, Eddie Murray, David Taylor, Ian Walker and Simon Townsend whom we have now entered I am afraid at the cost of £6 per head.
2011-01-01Mike CoppinThe Northern AA XC Champs at Sunderland on 29th Jan '11. The Club entries had to be in by this week and Barry & I were only aware of two definite entries which we have put forward as Luke Betts and David Taylor. We viewed the distance as too far for the rest of us !
2010-12-28Stuart and SimonNo club training until Tuesday 4th January 2010. Meet at Holy Cross RC School at 18:30. Have a good new year.

2010-12-15Mike CoppinChorley AC has thanked, by way of flowers, Julie(& Paul) for arranging the excellent Xmas 'do'. Such an ability to organise has led us to ask about her plans for a Summer barbeque ??!!
2010-12-15Mike CoppinStuart, the Botany Bay glove belongs to Adrian Smith, whom I found looking for it after all had left.
2010-12-14JanThankyou to all the junior girls and boys who have worked hard the past few months on Monday evenings at Holy Cross taking part in a number of athletic activities. 2010-12-07stuarti know what you mean with the sat nav. i went to do ampleforth a few years ago and ended up down a country lane, i then came to a railway crossing but it was only for people on foot, about 45 mins out of my way but i enjoyed the race a tough 7 miles with the nasty climb in the first mile and half. i stayed the night before so had plenty time to get there
2010-12-07Tom HiltonHi all, As I've already mentioned to a few club members, I've started a Blog. Simon's kindly provided a link from the CAC Website under the 'Social' heading on the 'Links' page. I'm too excited about it to read the help pages or tutorials so am doing everything by trial and error but it seems to be producing reasonable results. Have a look see what you think. I welcome comments - constructive or humorous! It's liable to change on a regular basis as I have plenty of material to add yet and ideas keep occurring. -- Tom Hilton

2010-11-28SimonSimon Townsend was the lone Chorley AC runner to join 139 other runners for the annual David Staff Fell Race on the moors of Darwen. He finished the 5.1m, 1200ft icy course in 41st place with a time of 42:32 (just 10 secs from a PB).
2010-11-28Steven WildeSteven Wilde and Phil McCullagh braved the artic conditions to shiver their ageing timbers around the frozen lanes of Salwick for the Wesham 10k on Sat 27th Nov.(Steven 50:46 & Phil 51:02). This race, which included much of the Wesham interclub route, used the CHIP Timing facility. I know this expression to refer to the use of modern technology to record accurately the race finishing times. Previously ,I had thought it might relate to the period of time it took Harry Ramsden and the like to prepare the popular potato-based food item which often accompanies battered fish. Runaholic Phil then headed off to Liverpool to take part in the Sefton Park cross country meeting. In contrast ,after sampling the delights of the "teaspoon" and "saucer" of Witton Park, I quickly realised that cross country wasn't exactly my cup of tea.

2010-11-03Tom HiltonPhil McCullagh If my perception of the Preston 10 at Hutton is 5 out of 10 for severity as opposed to Hindburn at 7/10 how do you think I might perceive Rossendale? I'm prepared to sacrifice an expected massive improvement on last years' Hutton time by also running Rossendale but do you think that I might have enough left to have a good race at Hutton a day after Rossendale?

2010-10-15Tom HiltonMike Copin - Now, now Mike - you know I said I wasn't doing any XC until next season when, hopefully I will be much fitter! However, as you have publicly thrown out a challenge, I don't have any races planned until Standish Hall - and the nights are still light enough for me to finish before it goes dark! . . . . Go on then, enter me and I'll bring up the rear again!

2010-10-06Tom HiltonI would have liked to have run the Rivington Trail Race today (02/10/10) but had entered the Coniston Trail Race as a follow-up to the Hawkshead Trail Race which I did in April. The Coniston Race was over 15k (although my Garmin recorded only 8.25 miles). The course is less demanding than Hawkshead although the rock staircase up to the 4k point was tough. Thank goodness it came soon after the start - unlike the 'Coffin Trail' which hits you at 11k in the Hawkshead race! There's a long, mainly downhill section back to the lake which requires precice foot placement that slows all but experienced descenders (fell runners). After reaching the lake, gravity assisted progress stopped and I tired quickly over the gently undulating last three kilometers. No finished 422/435 in 1:52:29. By the half mile point the last of the tail-enders had passed me but half a mile later I had started clawing people back and eventually hauled in a dozen or so. Of those I passed on the final descent four came past on the tiring run-in although I retook one of them. I can recommend these races (there are also two more in the series). £21 may seem a bit steep, but you do get a technical T shirt, fabulous scenery and a chance to win one of a wide variety of spot prizes based on race numbers after the presentation.
2010-10-06John PaynWe have been asked if Chorley AC would be willing to compete in the Isle of Mann for one of the track tournaments (Northern Mens and Womens) for next year. The committee would like to canvass opinions from the athletes involved. Please email or talk to committee members.
2010-10-06John PaynThe Chorley AC Committee recognises the importance of our younger members, and so we would like to find a Junior Representative(s?) to gather and feedback the views of junior and primary aged members; potentially influencing how the club is run. Anybody interested in such a role should speak to John P, Mike C or Simon at anytime.

2010-09-20Tom HI was the only member to have run the flood shortened Garstang Half Marathon(reported as 11.75m - but by my logging closer to 11.96m) My pos: 183/198 - 2:02:17. This was my first race since the final inter-club in Worden but my training has gone well - Evidence: 10.13 p/m today vs 10.05 p/m at 4m Worden. I might have gone even faster but my right knee locked at 4.5m and I was reduced to 20 mtrs hobling - 10 mtrs walking until 5.5m (11.55 fifth and 11.16 sixth miles) when it suddenly went OK. I then started flying - even putting in an 8.32 ninth mile!

2010-05-23MikeUpdates on Terry Dickenson and Stuart Swann Terry seems cheerful and positive, according to his wife Pat, and is to have another 'stent' input to his heart under 'non-emergency' operative conditions which sounds good !
Coach Stuart has had a pacemaker fitted and amazingly is on feet after a couple of days viewing our running efforts.
Interestingly both hospitals say that the level of fitness of both Terry and Stuart is a major factor to less damage occurring and the ease of operation and recovery of both patients....obviously there is a big benefit from being a runner !!

2010-03-31MarcoPlease can someone email me the club crest as I am still getting prices for club tops. I was looking at having a central crest on the front and Chorley AC on the back. Hoody tops seem popular & I have a local firm that can supply a very good quality red top with black hood inner, printed on two sides on 10 days delivery. Initial prices are just under £20, may be able to push for a further discount if our initial order is over 20 pieces. I can get sample for fit if we want to progress.
2010-03-29MikePerpetual motion man Phil McCullagh declined a rest weekend by taking on the 10 mile Ultrafit road race at St.Annes finishing 216th in 83:26 just outside the 80 mins hoped for. He was joined on this trip with a rare outing from Jim Munn Vet 75 who finished 348th(118:34). John Swift was 4th vet70 and Jim Munn 4th vet75 which is a staggering statistic re the increasing ages of the current running fields.
2010-03-29MikeTwo decided to embark on the 9 mile Noonstone English Championship Fell Race at Todmorden and it proved to be an extremely difficult day for both with Dave Kershaw recording an unusually late finish of 329th(104:36) and John Swift 420th(139:24).

2010-02-26SimonGood luck to all the runners at tomorrow's National XC in Leeds.
2010-02-24SimonNext Tuesday's training will be based at Holy Cross High School.
2010-02-22Mike CoppinThe following need to report for duty as entries have been registered for the National XC at Roudhay Park, Leeds(LS8.2ER for satnavs) - 14:00 Fergus Tallon, 11:00 Adam & Ryan Sciacca, Joe Ellison, Ben Ramsay 12:25 Luke Betts 15:00 Barry Chester, Eddie Murray, Henry Minorczyk, Phil McCullagh, Paul Wareing, Dave Taylor, Ian Walker, Rick Cordwell, Dave Kershaw & unwisely Mike Coppin. There are no official car parks at Leeds so it will all be 'on street' and with the numbers involved surely chaotic. I therefore suggest we take as few vehicles as possible and co-ordinate thro' Stuart and Barry Chester.
2010-02-22TerryClub Chairman John Payn was putting his race walking skills to the test in the "Ellis Trophy", a 15Km undulating race around Heapey finishing 6th overall in 1 hour 44 mins 40 secs. 2010-02-22TerryAfter his recent Chernobyl 10K Leo Stones entered the much hillier Blackburn Winter Warmer 10K finishing 156th and a better time of 51:11.
2010-02-22TerryDavid Kershaw forsook the X-C for the more difficult Winter Hill Fell race over Rivington where he was slightly disappointed with his 124th(2hrs 17:39) and 13th vet50.

2010-02-18RobynIRONMAN TRIATHLON

After being acclaimed as a great success in 2009, we are delighted to confirm that the Ironman Triathlon will be returning to Bolton this year on Sunday 1st August.

We are now on the look out for people to help with road marshalling duties and I am writing to ask if you would be kind enough to advertise on behalf of us. I realise that the event is still some time away and therefore you may not yet be in a position to confirm, but we would be delighted to hear from you if you think you might be able to join us.

As before, we will be producing full details of the marshalling duties nearer the time, plus supply tabards and any other equipment that may be needed on the day. We will also be providing goodie bags, which will include an official Ironman tee-shirt.

Between now and the big day we will keep you updated with developments and the latest news surrounding the event.
2010-02-17SimonBack by popular demand and 'cos we get bored on Sundays, there is a plan for a club run up Great Hill on Sunday. Meet at Brinscall Baths car park at 12:00. Run should take an hour or so. All welcome.

Ruth ran in Greater Manchester Schools XC today and came 30th running in 4th for the Bolton team having come 4th overall in Bolton on Wednesday.

I am suggesting a 'Roddlesworth Stroller' on Sunday at midday, meeting at the Hare & Hounds in Abbey Village (don't park in the car park). Trail or fell shoes may be useful. All welcome. Anyone interested?
2010-02-03SimonNext week's Tuesday night training is based at Holy Cross school as usual.
2010-02-01TerryWith no cross-country this weekend most Chorley AC athletes took the opportunity to rest. There will be another inspection first thing Saturday morning for a final say.
2010-01-06TerryIt is with great sadness that Chorley AC announce the passing away of ex Chorley AC runner Ken (Kenneth) Moss. Ken was one of the finest runners in the North of England competing at elite level for Chorley AC at national and international level. He lead the club to many glories and also represented World Runners at various distances from 10 mile to Marathon. When he moved to Cheshire he joined Vale Royal and then Northern Vets- as a veteran he was always within the first ten overall of any race outpacing many, many younger runners.
The running world will mourn this "gentleman" of running and the club extends their sincere condolences to all his family."
2010-01-05Mike CoppinAt the Burnley XC on 19/12/09 a sum of money was found and handed in to Dawn Lock. If anyone thinks it might be theirs please phone Dawn on 01253.721514.

2010-01-05SimonTuesday night training is cancelled due to adverse weather conditions, and Holy Cross High School is closed.
2010-01-04Mike CoppinIt is with sadness that we hear of the death of former CAC athlete Ken Moss on 29th Dec from kidney cancer. Ken was a longstanding & starting member of this Club before moving South to Vale Royal with his work. Ken was selected to represent England at the marathon a few times after winning the Versaille marathon and being 2nd in the Paris marathon but these occasions were always in hot locations such as Kenya, Australia & Japan and Ken did not like 'warm'. When running for Chorley he was a consistent race winner locally and won races such as Freckleton 5 or 6 times. There are probably still some of his records around. His parents live in Stump Lane, Chorley so he was always back visiting and would be seen in various local events with him still winning his category V55. His funeral is at St.Lawrence, Chorley on Wednesday 6th at 12:00 for anyone wishing to attend.
2010-01-03StepheJan DOES NOT require a lift for club on Tuesday. Neither Jan or Stephe will attend.

2009-09-28TerryClub coaches Stuart Swann and Jan Mayor tackled the Great Langdale in the Lake District for their first marathon. This scenic hilly course is the province of seasoned marathoners and ultra runners, indeed many in the race have run over a 100 marathons each. They finished in 95th & 96th one second apart in 5hrs 58min to a huge cheer and welcome from all the other finishers and spectators. John Swift celebrated turning 70 by producing a star performance to finish in 73rd place (4:52:42) winning the vet70 prize. Jan Mayor was also 2nd lady vet50.
2009-09-28TerryIt is unusual in fell running to start a race at the top of a hill and then run down and back up which is what happened at Blackshaw Head in the last of the Inter Club fell clashes! Chorley AC's team saw Dave Kershaw finish in 34th(49:04), Jonathan Betts 45th(53:36) with an excellent run despite a slight injury, Henry Minorczyk 50th(55:41), Stuart Swann 70th(65:39) and Mike Coppin 78th(79:39). Henry Minorczyk was 2nd vet60 with Dave Kershaw and Stuart Swann achieving 6th in the V50 & V60 categories. In the Inter Club competition Dave's 3rd place supported by Jonathan and Henry's 7th & 8th enabled Chorley to gain 2nd place to Wesham overall, were 3rd in the vets but 1st in both the vet50s and 60s teams.

In the overall series Chorley came 3rd as did the vets and vet50s but convincingly won the vet60s where Henry Minorczyk was the clear winner. Paul Bass was 7th, Henry 11th, Dave Kershaw 15th, Jonathan Betts 18th with Stuart Swann & Mike Coppin 26th & 27th(4th & 5th vet60s).
2009-09-28TerryChorley AC runner Steven Wilde undertook his first marathon venture at Fleetwood on a rather warm day. He comfortably finished in 126th in 4:50:05 and achieved second vet55.

2009-09-21MarcoChorley AC held its own against some of the biggest clubs in the North West this weekend. The North West Road Relays was very well attended with all counties entering a number of teams across all age groups. We entered an under 15 team that after a number of time trials was made up of Ryan Sciacca running the 1st leg, Adam Sciacca running the 2nd & Ben Ramsey running the 3rd. As predicted the boys ran a consistent race, holding their own agains some of the fastest power of 10 athletes in the North West. In the overall competition Cheshire stole the win running a very fast confident race. Our boys came a very credible 5th overall and gained the Silver Medal in the Lancashire competition being piped to Gold by 1 second by Preston. Very rough times for the boys were: Ryan = 9.48, Adam = 10.17, Ben = 10.44. Well done to everyone. I will keep my eye out for the official times

2009-07-13SimonWell done to Kath (my wife) and Anya (my daughter) who both successfully completed the Leyland Race for Life 5K with 2,100 other women on Sunday. For both it was their first 5K; on a off road circuit which was basically the winter XC course (without as much mud). The winning time was about 23mins (slowed by the terrain and over 2000 runners and walkers blocking the paths!), and Anya finished about 5mins later (and probably in top 50) despite having to stop and take off her trackie bottoms after one lap (losing at least 1min and many places). Kath had never run up to 3 weeks ago, and still finished in about 33mins.

2009-04-06MikeThe Cross Country season for 2008/09 was wound up with the Mid Lancs. presentations at Bamber Bridge and Chorley AC athletes featured in the all categories , where 3520 competed throughout the season with an average of 587 runners per race.
The team event brought many accolades and rewards, where Chorley AC won silver medals and promotion to Division 2, which is promotion for two successive years, and demonstrates the strength in depth of the club. After leading for most of the season in most categories, the club was just bettered by Garstang on the 'discard' rule whereby the worst two results are "ditched".
It was even more bitter for the vet 40 team who again had led all season but were dropped to 3rd position by the discards of Horwich and Accrington. However the vet 60s , also achieved silver medal status where they had been second to Clayton-le-Moors all season.
The Chorley 'B' team came 11th in Division 4 and the vet 50s also 11th overall. Chorley medallists were :- Paul Wareing, Simon Townsend, Paul Bass, David Taylor, Jim Cosgrove, Barry Chester, Henry Minorczyk and Roy Paul. Henry Minorczyk also led the vet 60s gaining another silver medal along with Eddie Murray and John Swift. The valiant vet 40s who were just pushed into 3rd place were Paul Wareing, Simon Townsend, David Taylor, Jim Cosgrove and Roy Paul.

2009-03-23MikeReminder to all AC athletes that the club's AGM and presentation takes place this Thursday.
2009-03-23MikeRyan Sciacca, who has been a mainstay of Chorley AC's U15s this year, ran in the English Schools Cross Country Championships at Loughborough this weekend and produced an excellent performance.
2009-03-23MikeThe South East Lancs. Cross Country presentations for 2008/09 season saw an excellent prize winner for Chorley in Luke Betts who finished first in the U15s. However it could have been so much better as it was a frustrating experience for Sean Wareing in the U20s with two first places but unable to complete due to injury and also Tom Booth in the U17s who could of snatched a medal if persistent injuries had not robbed him of finishes. However 17 athletes ran for CAC with 7 completing the series with 5th Ryan Sciacca(U15s), 5th Les Paul(Vet 60), 6th Mike Coppin(Vet 60), 14th Paul Wareing (Vet 40), 20th David Taylor(Vet 40), 21st Michael Murray(Vet 50) .
